Indonesia Revitalizes National Gallery While Preserving Heritage Architecture

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is revitalizing the National Gallery of Indonesia while prioritizing the preservation of its historic Neo-Classical architecture. Minister of Culture Fadli Zon, said the revitalization is aimed at balancing the protection of cultural heritage with the development of modern facilities that meet international standards.

Fadli discussed the initial revitalization design during a strategic meeting with architect, Jasin Tedjasukmana at the Ministry of Culture’s office in Jakarta on Monday, August 31, 2026. The discussion focused on ensuring that new developments remain compatible with the existing heritage buildings.

Jasin said the revitalization of heritage buildings requires a careful and detailed approach. He emphasized that new structures should be lightweight and designed in a way that does not overpower the main historic façade.

“The revitalization and addition of buildings at the National Gallery must maintain unity with the existing architectural style. The old buildings must not be overshadowed by the new ones,” he said.

The Minister welcomed the approach and stressed the importance of maintaining visual consistency throughout the gallery complex. “The character of the buildings in this area needs to adopt a common and harmonious architectural language,” Fadli said.

The revitalization plan includes the restoration of Building A and the Auditorium, as well as the development of new supporting facilities through an adaptive approach. The project will also introduce a modern entrance integrated with public transportation and a rooftop facility with a restaurant overlooking Jakarta’s cultural landscape.

The landscape design is also planned to be more open and welcoming to the public, allowing the gallery complex to function as a more inclusive cultural space. The government aims to improve not only the buildings but also the overall spatial arrangement and visitor experience.

Fadli also highlighted improvements to the exhibition layout and visitor circulation as important elements of the revitalization. The project is part of the Ministry of Culture’s broader commitment to preserving Indonesia’s cultural heritage while developing a public cultural space that is inclusive, educational, and relevant to contemporary needs.
