RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Centuries-old traditions from the coast of Guangdong, China, found renewed expression across Indonesia’s archipelago through a Guangfu cultural exchange event titled Departing from Zhuji Xiang, held in Jakarta on Thursday, August 27, 2026. The event presented the heritage of Cantonese migrants not merely as a historical memory, but as a distinctive element that enriches Indonesia’s diverse cultural landscape.
Secretary-General of the Guang Zhao Association of Indonesia, Huang Xian’an, said that the majority of ethnic Chinese Indonesians are descendants of Guangfu people. However, he said the dissemination of Cantonese culture in Indonesia has remained limited in recent years.
“We hope this event can serve as a momentum to introduce Guangfu culture more widely, while also encouraging its preservation and transmission to future generations in Indonesia,” said Huang in a statement on Friday, August 28, 2026.
Guangfu culture refers to the culture of the Cantonese people, originating in Guangzhou and surrounding areas of China’s Guangdong Province. The cultural exchange featured an exhibition on the history of Zhuji Xiang, excerpts from Cantonese opera, and a Cantonese-language stand-up comedy performance.
The program combined the history and culture of Zhuji, passed down over thousands of years, with Indonesia’s cultural diversity as an archipelagic nation. Zhuji Xiang is widely known as the ancestral homeland of the people of Guangdong. From this place, they migrated to southern regions and crossed the seas to Southeast Asia centuries ago.
These migrants brought the Cantonese language, traditional opera, as well as Guangfu customs and traditions, which later developed within ethnic Chinese communities across Southeast Asia.
As reported by Antara, the event provided an opportunity for Indonesia’s ethnic Chinese community to learn about the history of Zhuji Xiang and Cantonese opera from a different perspective. The opportunity was open to both long-established residents and those who have settled in the country more recently.
Through the cultural exchange, the historical and cultural ties between the Guangfu people and Indonesia’s ethnic Chinese community are expected to be preserved and passed on to future generations. ***
