RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Ministry of Culture held the 2026 Proclamation Historical Walk on Sunday, 16 August 2026, as part of the 81st Independence Day celebrations, inviting the public to retrace the steps across important historical sites linked to the country’s struggle for independence. The event was part of the Proclamation Month series organized by the Museum and Cultural Heritage Agency and the Museum of the Formulation of the Proclamation Manuscript.
Culture Minister Fadli Zon, who opened the event, said the historical walk should be viewed as a form of historical literacy that helps people understand the significance of places, artifacts, and events connected to Indonesia’s independence. “We walk through the city while reading its layers of history, connecting place names, artifacts, and events,” Fadli said.
The Proclamation Historical Walk has been held annually on 16 August since 1983 to commemorate the formulation of the Proclamation Manuscript on 16 August 1945. The activity also aims to help participants understand the values of struggle, unity, sacrifice, and patriotism reflected in Indonesia’s journey toward independence.
Fadli said Independence Day should not only be an occasion to remember the past but also a reminder of the responsibility to continue building the nation. “We should not only remember, but also consider how to give meaning to independence in the best possible way toward achieving the ideals of independence,” he said.
The minister also proposed extending the route of the historical walk by introducing a route from Rengasdengklok to the Museum of the Formulation of the Proclamation Manuscript. He said the proposed route could provide the public with a broader experience of tracing the historical journey surrounding Indonesia’s proclamation of independence.
Students, community groups, and members of the public participated in the event, reflecting a broad effort to introduce Indonesia’s historical heritage to different generations. The participants included students from several schools, as well as cultural and historical communities involved in performances and historical reenactments.
The Proclamation Month series also featured a temporary photo and numismatic exhibition titled “Merdeka, Berdaulat, dan Menempa Rupa: Kilas Balik Proklamasi dan Perjalanan Mata Uang sebagai Saksi Kemerdekaan,” showcasing photographs and currency as historical sources and collective memories. Fadli said the exhibition demonstrated that currency and stamps could also serve as witnesses to the nation’s history, alongside important photographs by the Mendur brothers.
Fadli expressed hope that the Proclamation Month activities would encourage Indonesians to learn more about their history, honor those who came before them, and carry their spirit forward through meaningful contributions. “We must continue to pass the torch of independence to future generations,” he said.
