RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in historical reconstruction is no longer limited to arbitrary visualisations. Galeri Indonesia Kaya in Jakarta has officially presented an immersive Borobudur exhibition using ethical AI technology, which grounds all of its visual narratives in in-depth research and validated evidence from ancient inscriptions.

The interactive art exhibition, Purwacarita Borobudur: Exploring History Through Space and Sense, will be held from September to December at Galeri Indonesia Kaya. Through eight ethical AI-based immersive experiences, visitors are invited to learn more about the origins of Borobudur Temple.

“We are all aware that Indonesians tend not to enjoy reading very much; they prefer visuals, especially young people today. So, when this concept was presented to us, and with AI now rapidly developing, we saw that AI could be very useful for us in connecting the history of the past with the current generation,” said Galeri Indonesia Kaya Program Director, Renitasari Adrian, during a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

In collaboration with Bening Digital Indonesia and Curaweda, the work uses validated research and historical facts as its main foundation in developing its narrative. On the same occasion, Curaweda Founder and CEO, Azhfar Muhammad Fuad, said AI was used to support the visualization of stories based on in-depth research by experts.

As reported by Antara, visitors are invited to explore the origins of Borobudur Temple’s ancient name, Kāmulan i Bhūmisambhāra, as recorded in historical inscriptions. In addition, the exhibition presents the grandeur of the temple’s cosmology through various interactive forms across eight selected features.

The first, Sapa Borobudur, serves as a visual introduction to the landscape and historical setting during the establishment of Borobudur. Karmawibhangga and Avadana then present the stories depicted in the two reliefs through immersive theatre.

Third, Batu Carita allows visitors to interact with four figures: King Samaratungga, Princess Pramodhawardhani, Sudhana, and Manohara.

Mandala invites visitors to circle Borobudur using their own devices while following the sacred route taken by ancient pilgrims from Mendut Temple and Pawon Temple to the Main Stupa.

The fifth feature, Jelajah Borobudur, offers an adventure to Borobudur and the temples surrounding it.

Buku Carita (Story Book) tells the story of Princess Pramodhawardhani’s journey to understand her father, King Samaratungga’s, purpose in building Borobudur.

The seventh, Harmoni Borobudur, presents an illustration of the natural surroundings of Borobudur in the past, along with animals such as peacocks, Javan deer, and elephants that respond to visitors’ movements through sensors.

Finally, Asal Mula Borobudur (the Origin of Borobudur) the Movie is the main presentation held at the Galeri Indonesia Kaya Auditorium, bringing visitors closer to the story behind the creation of Borobudur Temple and its reliefs. ***
