RRI.CO.ID, Lumajang - The Lumajang Regency Administration is spearheading the creation of a Tumpak Sewu batik motif as a new cultural identity, drawing inspiration from the iconic Tumpak Sewu Waterfall to promote the local creative economy and tourism sector.

The initiative was introduced during a meeting between Lumajang Regent Indah Amperawati and local batik artisans on Thursday, July 30, 2026.

Although Lumajang is not traditionally recognized as a batik hub in East Java, artisans responded to the administration’s call by producing 22 design variations that capture the visual essence of the world‑renowned waterfall.

Authorities plan to evaluate the submissions to select a flagship motif that will be officially produced and marketed as an authentic souvenir for domestic and international visitors.

Regional planners hope the branded batik will expand commercial opportunities for local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) while strengthening Lumajang’s image as a nature‑ and culture‑based tourism destination.

Regent Indah expressed optimism about the initiative. “Tumpak Sewu is Indonesia’s Niagara that has gone global. We must utilize this huge potential to strengthen Lumajang Regency’s identity, one of which is through a signature batik work that highlights the beauty of Tumpak Sewu,” she said, as quoted by Infopublik.id.

She praised the enthusiasm of Lumajang’s batik community. “This was a challenge for the batik makers, and praise be to God, they were able to answer that challenge by producing 22 Tumpak Sewu batik motif models. We will evaluate all of these motifs to select the best design to become the pride of Lumajang Regency,” Indah explained. ***
