RRI.CO.ID, Medan - The annual Karo Flower and Fruit Festival took center stage in Berastagi, Karo Regency, emerging as a flagship agritourism highlight for North Sumatra. Thousands of visitors gathered at Mejuah‑juah Park to celebrate the region’s harvest and cultural traditions.

Recognized as one of the top 125 featured events in the Ministry of Tourism’s Karisma Event Nusantara (KEN) calendar, the 2026 festival featured a vibrant street parade through Berastagi. Attractions included floats adorned with fresh blooms and produce, artistic costumes crafted from agricultural materials, marching bands, and Berastagi’s signature horses.

The festival also showcased traditional heritage through the Erpangir Ku‑Lao self‑cleansing ritual, an ancestral Karo tradition using aromatic herbs, flowers, and kaffir lime to symbolize gratitude for agricultural abundance, physical healing, and spiritual renewal.

During the opening ceremony, traditional leaders honored visiting dignitaries, including the conferment of the Karo Batak clan name (marga) “Ginting” upon central government officials.

Central and regional officials expressed full support, commending the high level of community participation and the festival’s potential to expand onto a global stage.

Minister of Cooperatives, Ferry Juliantono, affirmed the government’s commitment to elevating the scale of the festival. “The Karo Flower and Fruit Festival is one of the 125 best events in Indonesia. We will fully support next year’s event (2027) so that its scale increases into an international event,” Ferry said when opening the festival in Berastagi on Thursday, July 30, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Ferry also praised the enthusiasm of the Karo community as a vital foundation for regional economic growth. “The spirit of the people of Tanah Karo is an essential asset for this regency to continuously develop its tourism and economic sectors based on local potential,” he added. ***
