RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia earned four bronze medals and one Honorable Mention at the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2026, held in Shanghai, China, from July 10 to 21. The achievement underscores the country's continued investment in developing young mathematical talent through the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.

According to a statement received from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, in Jakarta on Monday 27 July, the Indonesian delegation's performance reflects years of systematic talent development led by the National Achievement Center (Puspresnas). The IMO is regarded as the world's most prestigious mathematics competition for secondary school students, attracting 685 contestants from 119 countries this year.

Head of Puspresnas, Maria Veronica Irene Herdjiono, congratulated the team for demonstrating perseverance, integrity, and academic excellence throughout the competition. "Congratulations to all members of the Indonesian delegation for bringing pride to the nation at the International Mathematical Olympiad 2026. This achievement is the result of the students' hard work, the dedication of their mentors, and the unwavering support of schools, parents, and everyone involved in nurturing young talent," she said.

The four bronze medals were awarded to Jayden Jurianto of SMAK 1 Penabur Jakarta, Steven Abiel Cahyono of SMA Katolik St. Louis 1 Surabaya, Danica Odelia of SMAK Penabur Gading Serpong, and Yusril Ihsan Adinatanegara of SMA Negeri 1 Glagah, Banyuwangi. Matthew Ravanelli Tjiptono of SMAK Penabur Banda also earned an Honorable Mention.

Before competing in Shanghai, the students advanced through Indonesia's National Science Olympiad selection process and completed intensive training organized by Puspresnas. The program focused on strengthening mathematical problem-solving skills, competition strategies, and mental preparedness for international contests.

IMO 2026 team coordinator Aleams Barra of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) said this year's problems were particularly demanding for participants from around the world. "This year's questions were extremely challenging, but we are grateful that our students secured four bronze medals. We will learn from this experience and work even harder to achieve better results next year," he said.

Bronze medalist Jayden Jurianto, expressed pride in representing Indonesia on the international stage for a second consecutive year after previously winning a bronze medal at the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence. Fellow medalist Danica Odelia thanked the Ministry and Puspresnas for providing the support needed to compete internationally, while Yusril Ihsan Adinatanegara said he was relieved and grateful to return home with a bronze medal after initially fearing he would miss the podium.

Indonesia's performance at IMO 2026 reinforces the government's commitment to building a sustainable ecosystem for nurturing young scientific talent. By strengthening coaching programs and collaboration among educators, schools, and families, the ministry aims to prepare more Indonesian students to excel in global academic competitions and contribute to the advancement of science and mathematics worldwide.
