RRI.CO.ID, Banyuwangi - Indonesia promoted traditional games among children through the Traditional Memengan Festival in Banyuwangi, East Java. The event was held at Taman Blambangan on Saturday, July 25, 2026, involving nearly 1,000 kindergarten and elementary school students.

The festival introduced various Indonesian traditional games, including gobak sodor, jump rope, hopscotch, stilts, congklak, and other cultural activities. The Traditional Memengan Festival was organized by the Banyuwangi Regency Government as part of National Children's Day celebrations.

Banyuwangi Regent, Ipuk Fiestiandani, said traditional games provide important lessons for children's character development. She highlighted values such as teamwork, problem-solving, discipline, and social interaction.

"This festival is part of the government's effort to preserve character education values built by our ancestors. Traditional games teach social intelligence, teamwork, problem solving, discipline, and the ability to accept defeat gracefully," Ipuk said.

Ipuk added that traditional games can become a balance for children amid increasing technology use. She said providing spaces for direct interaction can help maintain children's character and encourage active lifestyles.

Acting Head of Banyuwangi Education Office, Alfian, said the festival aimed to introduce and preserve traditional games among younger generations. He added that the activity involved students from 25 districts across Banyuwangi.

The event featured various games, including semprongan karet, a traditional game where children blow rubber bands, as well as traditional toys made from natural materials. The activities allowed children to experience games once commonly played by previous generations.

Besides traditional games, Banyuwangi's National Children's Day celebration also featured student innovation exhibitions and cultural performances. The programs showcased children's creativity in technology, arts, and local culture.

Through the festival, Banyuwangi encouraged younger generations to appreciate Indonesia's cultural heritage while developing social skills through traditional activities. The initiative reflects efforts to preserve cultural values in the digital era.
