RRI.CO.ID, Magelang Regency - The Five Mountains Festival is set to return with an unusual theme, Makin Goblok Bareng (Getting More Foolish Together), while preserving the spirit of humility behind it. The theme marks the 25th Five Mountains Festival, or silver jubilee, which will be held in Warangan Hamlet, Muneng Warangan Village, Pakis Subdistrict, Magelang Regency, Central Java from 10–12 July 2026.

The cultural festival initiated by farmer-artists from the slopes of Mount Merapi, Merbabu, Andong, Sumbing, and Menoreh will once again be hosted by Warangan Hamlet. This year will be the third time the hamlet has been chosen as the festival venue.

“Warangan Hamlet is hosting the Five Mountains Festival for the third time, namely the first Lima Gunung Festival in 2022, then the second in 2023, and the 13th Lima Gunung Festival in 2024. In 2026, which coincides with the silver jubilee of the mountain farmers’ arts movement, Warangan Hamlet will once again be the host,” said Lima Gunung Community Head, Sujono, on Tuesday, 7 July 2026.

Sujono explained that the theme Getting More Foolish Together invites people to remain humble amid the rapid development of science and technology. It also serves as a reminder that everyone must keep learning and recognize their own limitations.

According to him, the theme also reinforces the Five Mountains Community’s commitment to preserving culture and rural local wisdom. Values of togetherness and mutual cooperation remain at the heart of the festival.

Sujono added that the Five Mountains Festival has maintained a self-funded principle since it was first held. Over its 25-year history, the festival has never used sponsorship funds from either the administration or private parties.

“The Five Mountains artists have agreed that the festival will not use sponsorship funding from the private sector or the administration. It is supported through self-reliance by the Five Mountains artists and the host community,” he said.

Meanwhile, Five Mountains Community activist, Endah Pertiwi, said the committee is limiting the number of performers because of time constraints. The high level of interest from arts groups has also forced organizers to curate the participants.

“We are limiting the number of performers because festival time is limited. The committee also has to conduct participant curation due to the strong interest from arts groups to perform at this Five Mountains Festival,” said Endah.

A total of 85 arts groups from various regions across Indonesia are scheduled to perform during the three-day festival. Each group will be given 15 minutes on stage to present its artistic work on the slopes of Mount Merbabu. (Annaila Azzahra-EN)
