RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – UNESCO's recognition of Reog Ponorogo as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in December 2024 marked a proud moment for Indonesia. The recognition not only strengthened Reog's status as one of the nation's cultural treasures but also affirmed that the tradition, which has flourished among the people of Ponorogo, East Java, holds significant value on the international stage.

According to Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism, Reog is far more than a traditional performance staged during festivals and celebrations. For the people of Ponorogo, it is a regional identity and a cultural legacy that has been passed down from generation to generation for centuries. Behind the spectacular Dadak Merak performance and the distinctive sounds of the gamelan orchestra lie values of togetherness, courage, mutual cooperation, and respect for tradition.

One of Reog Ponorogo's most iconic features is the Dadak Merak, also known as Singo Barong—a giant lion-shaped mask adorned with peacock feathers. The remarkable feat of performers carrying the massive mask using only the strength of their jaws has long captivated audiences and remains the highlight of every performance.

In addition to Singo Barong, Reog features the Warok, a character symbolizing wisdom and resilience, and the Jathil, who represents youthful spirit, agility, and the energy of the younger generation. Together, these characters make Reog more than just an artistic performance; they serve as a medium for conveying life lessons and cultural values that remain relevant today.

UNESCO recognition was the culmination of years of collaborative efforts involving the government, artists, academics, and the people of Ponorogo. Extensive documentation of Reog's history, philosophy, social functions, and performance traditions was compiled as part of Indonesia's nomination dossier submitted to UNESCO.

Those efforts paid off on December 3, 2024, when, during the 19th Session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee in Asunción, Paraguay, Reog Ponorogo was officially inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List under the "In Need of Urgent Safeguarding" category. The designation underscores the importance of preserving the tradition to ensure its survival amid the challenges of modernization.

The UNESCO inscription has brought significant benefits to both cultural preservation and tourism. It has sparked growing public interest in learning about Reog's history and philosophy, while art studios and cultural communities in Ponorogo continue to nurture and train younger generations of performers.

Meanwhile, the National Reog Ponorogo Festival has gained increasing recognition. In 2026, the festival was once again selected among the Top 10 events in Indonesia's Karisma Event Nusantara (KEN), further strengthening Ponorogo's reputation as one of the country's leading cultural tourism destinations.

Technological advances have also created new opportunities for Reog to reach wider audiences. Today, performances can be enjoyed through digital platforms and social media, while younger generations actively promote the tradition through creative content and cross-cultural collaborations.

UNESCO recognition confirms that Reog Ponorogo is not only the cultural heritage of the people of Ponorogo but also part of the world's shared cultural legacy. The challenge ahead is to ensure that the tradition continues to thrive without losing its authenticity, allowing it to be preserved and passed on to future generations.
