RRI.CO.ID, Tanah Datar - The upcoming Festival Minangkabau in Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra, is set to position cultural preservation as a primary driver for local economic growth and human resource development, local and national officials said on Thursday, June 25, 2026.

Scheduled to run from June 25 to 28 at the Istano Silinduang Bulan and Lapangan Cindua Mato Batusangkar, the annual celebration aims to project Minangkabau cultural identity onto the global stage while providing an immediate boost to the region's creative economy.

Deputy Manpower Minister Afriansyah Noor, who also serves as a Pagaruyung traditional community leader, lauded the cultural celebration for its dual focus on supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and upgrading the local workforce. He emphasized that the economic momentum generated by cultural tourism must be paired with measurable skill development.

"This festival can increase the income of MSME entrepreneurs and serve as a promotional platform for all existing products to the public," Afriansyah said during his opening remarks, as quoted by Antara.

Echoing the sentiment, Tanah Datar Regent Eka Putra said that the festival serves as a vital grassroots platform for subdistricts and villages to display their unique heritage. "This is very important, to showcase the various works of art and culture that each village has, so that they are known to the wider community," Eka said.

Centering around the iconic Istano Basa Pagaruyung as a symbol of cultural pride, the festival is designed to offer an immersive experience through a showcase of local crafts, traditional culinary arts, and theatrical performances. Visitors can expect to witness traditional Minangkabau arts, including alua pasambahan (ceremonial oration), silek (traditional martial arts), and randai (folk theater).

The Tanah Datar Regency administration has committed to utilizing the tourism sector as a sustainable economic engine. By actively involving local communities in cultural preservation and supporting the creative economy, the local administration hopes the festival will significantly increase domestic and international tourist arrivals while cementing Minangkabau heritage worldwide. ***
