RRI.CO.ID, Bengkulu – One of Indonesia’s most historic cultural traditions, Festival Tabut 2026, will be held in Bengkulu from June 16 to June 26, 2026. It coincides with 1–10 Muharram in the Islamic calendar.

This centuries-old cultural celebration, which has become an integral part of Bengkulu’s identity, carries deep historical significance. It also serves as a major cultural tourism attraction, drawing thousands of visitors every year.

Festival Tabut traces its origins to the Battle of Karbala, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, in 680 CE. The tradition was brought to Bengkulu by Muslim workers of Indian descent during the British colonial period and later blended with local customs and traditions. Over time, Tabut evolved from a community-based ritual into a large-scale cultural festival involving various segments of society and symbolizing the unity of the people of Bengkulu.

Linguistically, the word tabut comes from the Arabic term al-tabut, meaning a wooden chest, coffin, or bier. In the local context, it refers to a ceremonial structure made of woven bamboo or a wooden representation of the mythical Buraq bird, which is paraded during the commemoration of the deaths of Hasan and Hussein, the grandsons of Prophet Muhammad, on the 10th of Muharram. The term also refers to the procession and traditional ceremonies associated with the event.

Throughout its ten-day celebration, Festival Tabut features a series of meaningful traditional rituals. The festivities begin with Mengambik Tanah and Duduk Penja, followed by Menjara, Meradai, Arak Penja, and Arak Sorban. As the festival approaches its conclusion, visitors can witness Tabut Naik Puncak and Arak Gedang, before the event ends with Tabut Tebuang, a symbolic ritual representing the end of mourning and the hope for a better future.

Beyond preserving tradition, Festival Tabut serves as an important platform for promoting Bengkulu’s arts and culture. The festival showcases a variety of local performances, including the energetic rhythms of Dol drumming, Tabut-inspired dance performances, traditional folk games, and exhibitions of local arts and crafts. These activities not only entertain visitors but also help introduce Bengkulu’s cultural heritage to younger generations and tourists.

Festival Tabut also reflects the spirit of community cooperation. Its preparation and implementation involve hereditary custodians of the tradition, artists, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), cultural communities, and local government institutions. This collaboration has helped keep the festival vibrant and relevant, allowing it to be passed down from generation to generation.

Today, Festival Tabut has become one of Indonesia’s premier cultural tourism events and is included in the Karisma Event Nusantara (KEN) program. In addition to witnessing the grandeur of the colorful Tabut structures, visitors can explore Bengkulu’s natural attractions, historical sites, traditional cuisine, and creative economy products. With its rich cultural heritage and unique charm, Festival Tabut stands as a testament to how local traditions can thrive while contributing to regional tourism and economic development.
