RRI.CO.ID, Gorontalo - As modernization reshapes daily life in Gorontalo, a local dance collective is reimagining traditional performances to make regional heritage resonate with younger audiences. Sanggar Pajongge presented Moragai, a single piece that blends four distinct Gorontalo dances into an accessible show designed to teach cultural values and local history through movement and music.
The troupe’s dance coach, Riski Harmain, said the work combines elements drawn from everyday activities and community life. "This dance represents four dances at once that are taken from the activities of the Gorontalo people," he said, as quoted by Antara.
Moragai weaves together movements and motifs from Hulondalo Lipuu, Linde, Bintea, and Lilimu. Each segment reflects specific aspects of local life, which are the fishing communities, coconut processing, activities around Lake Limboto, and Gorontalo’s broader cultural identity.
Riski explained the restructuring aims to help younger generations recognize and absorb the cultural meanings embedded in these art forms. Choreography and music were rearranged to be more accessible without erasing the distinctive features of each original dance.
"We rearranged the movements and music so they are easier for young people to accept, but still maintain the cultural message we want to convey," he said.
He argued that preserving culture depends on youth engagement, especially as modern entertainment options expand. Performance arts, he added, offer an effective medium for teaching history, tradition, and the community’s relationship with its environment and natural resources, which are the elements central to regional identity.
Through Moragai, Sanggar Pajongge aims to present local culture in a format that feels closer to young people, ensuring the transmission of values from one generation to the next. ***
