RRI.CO.ID, Bukittinggi - Bukittinggi City in West Sumatra launched an aggressive strategy to revitalize its tourism sector through the 1001 Events Calendar program. The initiative, spearheaded by the Bukittinggi Municipal Administration, is designed to transform the city's historical and natural assets into a dynamic hub for visitors, aligning with national efforts to strengthen regional tourism appeal.

During a two-day working visit to the city, Indonesian Minister of Tourism Widiayanti Putri Ardhana, toured iconic landmarks including the Jam Gadang area, Pasa Ateh, Panorama Baru, Sianok Canyon, and the historical Japanese Tunnel.

"It is impressive, given the beautiful natural landscape and its significance to the nation's history. This is complemented by good access and amenities, which is in line with the central government's program to encourage the strengthening of tourist attractions," said Minister Widiayanti in Bukittinggi on Thursday, April 30, 2026.

While praising the existing infrastructure, the Minister suggested that the city further enrich its offerings by integrating more cultural performances and artistic entertainment to prolong visitor stays and increase local spending. "Perhaps it can be further improved in terms of attractions. For access to tourist sites, it is already well-organized," she noted, as quoted by Antara.

Bukittinggi, which relies heavily on tourism for its Regional Original Revenue (PAD), is currently preparing for the centennial celebration of its landmark clock tower, Jam Gadang. The Minister confirmed her intention to return for the festivities.

"We came to Bukittinggi to appreciate the 100 years of Jam Gadang. The mayor has also requested our presence again at the peak of the activities in June," she added.

Bukittinggi Mayor Ramlan Nurmatias welcomed the Minister's guidance, detailing how the city has structured its calendar to sustain tourism momentum throughout the year.

“We have prepared 1001 events with an average of 200 events per year, including sports, religious, and cultural events, as well as seminars. These events serve to support our tourism,” explained the mayor.

To expand the reach of these initiatives, the Ministry of Tourism is also providing promotional support through digital platforms, including TikTok, to showcase Bukittinggi’s scenic beauty and urban charm to a broader global and domestic audience. ***
