RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Kebaya is a traditional attire hailing from Indonesia, known for its elegant and feminine silhouette. Hailing from various regions across the archipelago, this classic blouse is evolving into modern styles while staying true to its deep cultural heritage.

Far beyond a dress code for formal state events, the kebaya is increasingly being embraced as everyday wear. Organizations like Perempuan Berkebaya Indonesia (PBI) actively preserve, promote, and normalize the outfit for daily routines—and even outdoor activities like sports.

“Today, many young people are beginning to wear the kebaya when gathering with friends, attending certain events, or going to campus. They often pair it with jeans or short skirts.” the Head of PBI, Rahmi Hidayati, said to the Voice of Indonesia in Jakarta, on Friday, July 24, 2026.

As times change, the kebaya has adapted to match the fast pace of contemporary life. Modern takes often feature comfortable fabrics and versatile mix-and-match styling—allowing wearers to pair traditional embroidery with casual denim or sleek skirts.

Yet, despite these creative adaptations, what truly defines a kebaya? Rahmi affirmed that modest structure and symmetrical design remain essential to its identity.

“Kebaya is a garment that embodies modesty and deco. It was traditionally worn by the ancestors of Indonesian as a way of dressing modestly. Although there are many styles, a garment is considered a kebaya only if it meets this characteristic, a front opening, slips, and symmetrical left and right side,” she said.

In Indonesia, there are various styles of kebaya, one of them that’s commonly known is Kebaya Kutubaru. It is one of the most classic kebaya styles from Java, featuring a bef (connecting panel) at the chest, and made with laces.

Another that’s also widely known is Kebaya Encim, a result of acculturation between Chinese and Betawi culture, known for its bright colors. Historically, this type was favored by women of Chinese descent (Nyonya/Encim) in coastal regions.

Regardless of modern tweaks, the core shape remains rooted in tradition. Light, breathable fabrics now make the outfit adaptable to almost any setting without sacrificing its signature balance and modesty.

“...use kebaya because you love it. And kebaya is a very beautiful dress. You can use it wherever you go,” Rahmi, who climbs mountains with kebaya, said. “It's not difficult to use kebaya,” she said.
