RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The Andilan Potong Kebo tradition has once again been held ahead of Eid al-Fitr, bringing to life the spirit of togetherness that defines Betawi society, even as Jakarta continues to evolve into a global city. Chairperson of the Betawi Traditional Council and former Jakarta Governor, Fauzi Bowo, conveyed that Andilan Kebo is not only a cultural practice, but also a reflection of strong social and religious values.
“In every wealth that we possess, there is a share that belongs to others, whether they ask for it or not,” Fauzi Bowo said while attending the event at the Animal Health Center in Pondok Ranggon, East Jakarta.
The tradition originated from a collective community initiative. Residents come together to pool funds to purchase a buffalo, which is then slaughtered, and the meat is distributed among contributors and those in need. More than just a ritual, Andilan Kebo serves as a space for sharing, strengthening social bonds, and nurturing a sense of care among community members.

According to him, the core strength of this tradition lies in its spirit of solidarity and generosity, passed down through generations. He expressed hope that Andilan Kebo will continue to grow and remain an essential part of preserving Betawi culture.
The tradition had not been held for quite some time before being revived in 2025 by Betawi figure KH Marullah Matali in the Agrowisata Pasar Minggu area. Support has also come from Jakarta Governor, Pramono Anung, who sees Andilan Kebo as a cultural identity that remains relevant in modern urban life.
“This is a cultural tradition that we must continue to preserve,” Pramono said.
He added that Andilan Kebo reflects a lifestyle rooted in togetherness ranging from communal savings systems and mutual cooperation to inclusive acts of sharing. This year, nine buffaloes were slaughtered as part of the tradition leading up to Eid al-Fitr.
Amid Jakarta’s transformation, Pramono emphasized the importance of ensuring that Betawi culture continues to thrive in the city’s daily life, especially after being designated as the city’s primary cultural identity under Law Number 2 of 2024.
“As Jakarta transforms into a global city, we want to ensure that Betawi culture remains alive and continues to grow as a source of pride,” he said.
In addition to Andilan Kebo, the Jakarta Provincial Government is also planning to hold a haul (commemoration) for Betawi ulama and renovate the MH Thamrin Museum as part of efforts to strengthen the cultural ecosystem.
For the community, Andilan Kebo is not just an annual tradition, but also a reflection of a lifestyle that emphasizes togetherness, compassion, and social harmony as well as values that remain relevant amid the fast-paced rhythm of urban life.
