RRI.CO.ID, Tanah Datar - Beyond the technical maneuvers of martial arts, the ancient tradition of Minangkabau silek is being repositioned as a cornerstone of Indonesian identity and a potent tool for international cultural diplomacy.
Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, engaged in a strategic cultural dialogue with the Ikatan Guru Silek Sakato (Sakato Silek Teachers Association) in Tanah Datar, West Sumatra, on Friday, March 13, 2026. The meeting served as a vital platform to address the sustainability of traditional silek, punctuated by a powerful demonstration from the tuo silek (senior masters) and teachers who embody the philosophical depth of the art.
In Minangkabau tradition, silek is far more than a method of self-defense; it is an integral part of the customary value system that shapes character, ethics, and life philosophy. The dedication of the Sakato Silek Teachers Association is considered essential in ensuring this tradition is passed down through generations.
Minister Fadli Zon expressed deep enthusiasm for the silek tuo performances, reminding those present that Pencak Silat was officially recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2019.
“Pencak silat is a cultural heritage whose roots are widely developed in the archipelago. Not only in West Sumatra or Java, but almost throughout Indonesia, and even abroad,” the Minister said, as quoted by the ministry's official website.
He also highlighted how the art form has gained international fame through global cinema, showcasing Indonesia's unique martial techniques to the world.
To ensure long-term viability, Minister Fadli urged traditional silek communities to strengthen their institutional standing by establishing clear legal entities. This formalization is seen as a gateway for communities to access government support for festivals, knowledge documentation through book publishing, and the upgrading of cultural preservation facilities.
The patron of the Ikatan Guru Silek Sakato, Sutan Muhammad Yusuf Tuanku Mudo Rajo Disambah, noted the high enthusiasm across all age groups for preserving the tradition. He announced an upcoming milestone where 20 silat practitioners will represent the nation at the International Warrior Festival (Festival Pendekar Antarbangsa) in Malacca, Malaysia.
This move is a concrete effort to carry the nation's name through tradition onto the global stage.
Demonstrating the government's commitment, Minister Fadli Zon handed over a community strengthening package to support the preservation of the silek tradition. The assistance included rendang packages, prayer equipment, a fund of IDR 5 million (USD 295) for the formation of a legal foundation, and IDR 20 million for community operational costs.
The Ministry of Culture envisions that collaboration between the government and cultural practitioners will fortify the transfer of knowledge to the younger generation. By fostering dialogue, the Ministry seeks to formulate collective steps for cultural advancement rooted in living community values.
“The Ministry of Culture is here to facilitate and support efforts to preserve tradition. We hope that this traditional silek continues to develop, remains attractive to the younger generation, and stays alive for tens or even hundreds of years to come,” concluded Minister Fadli Zon. ***
