RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Amidst the tide of modernization and increasingly accessible manufactured products, Papua's noken is now at a crucial crossroads: to survive as a cultural identity or be slowly eclipsed by time.

Since December 4, 2012, noken has been officially included on UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding. This status is not only a sign of global recognition but also a signal that the continued existence of this tradition is under threat.

According to the Ministry of Culture website, for the people of Papua and West Papua Provinces, noken is more than just a woven bag. It is a part of everyday life.

Made from wood or leaf fibers that are manually processed—heated, soaked, dried, and then spun into thread—noken are tied by hand into a strong net bag. This process requires precision and high skill and can take months to master.

Noken are used to carry garden produce and sea catches, carry babies or small animals, store valuables, complement traditional ceremonies, and symbolize peace.

In Papua, which consists of around 250 ethnic groups, all use noken, with different names, both to carry and store personal belongings wherever they go. There is no other container besides noken. The Hugula tribe calls it su, the Dani tribe calls it jum, the Nduga tribe calls it singanik, the Serui tribe calls it rota, and the Sentani tribe calls it kangke.

The biggest challenge facing noken today is not the technique itself, but regeneration. The number of artisans continues to decline. Younger generations are increasingly less interested in learning weaving skills due to a lack of knowledge transmission, competition from mass-produced bags, the difficulty of obtaining traditional raw materials, and the shift in cultural values amidst modernization.

The inclusion of noken on UNESCO's list of urgently protected areas demonstrates that without serious intervention, this tradition could lose its relevance in the lives of Papuan people.

Philosophically and socioculturally, noken holds profound meaning for Papuans. It symbolizes identity, solidarity, and unity among the diverse ethnic groups in Papua. The use of noken unites them in a shared tradition. For Papuan women, noken symbolizes maturity, social maturity, and fertility, as the skill of making noken is often associated with their domestic responsibilities and social roles.

Noken also represents the balance between humans, nature, and the community, using natural materials and reflecting a harmonious relationship with the surrounding environment. Furthermore, noken is a symbol of ancestral traditions that demonstrate the importance of maintaining the continuity of traditional values, norms, and ethics, mutual respect, mutual cooperation, and responsibility towards the community.

For Papuan women, the ability to make noken symbolizes maturity, social maturity, and fertility. This skill is closely related to social roles and responsibilities within the community. In various traditions, noken is present as an accessory for proposals and weddings, part of initiation ceremonies, a symbol of the inauguration of tribal chiefs, a medium for post-conflict peace, and a repository of traditional heirlooms.

Furthermore, the noken is a symbol of ancestral traditions that demonstrate the importance of maintaining customary values, norms, and ethics, along with mutual respect, mutual cooperation, and responsibility towards the community.

International recognition has brought the noken onto the world stage. However, recognition alone is not enough. Preserving the noken is more than simply preserving a traditional bag; it is an effort to preserve the identity, values, and cultural heritage of the Papuan people amidst modernization. By appreciating and supporting the sustainability of the noken, we help preserve Indonesia's cultural plurality and create a bridge between tradition and the present. ***
