RRI.CO.ID, Yogyakarta - Pencak silat is viewed not only as a martial art, but also as a means of cultural education and a source of tourism that can strengthen the identity of the Special Region of Yogyakarta.

This idea emerged during a meeting between KGPAA Paku Alam X, the Deputy Governor of Yogyakarta, and the Paseduluran Angkringan Silat (Angkringan Silat Association's) at the Kepatihan Complex in Yogyakarta on Friday, January 30, 2026.

"We need a clear framework for pencak silat cultural activities so we can understand our goals and the impact of cultural literacy on society," said His Majesty, as quoted by the provincial administration official website.

He expressed belief that pencak silat communities play a strategic role as a bridge between ancestral cultural values and modern society. Therefore, pencak silat development must reach the wider community, especially the younger generation, with a relevant and sustainable approach.

His Majesty appreciated the Paseduluran Angkringan Silat efforts to preserve pencak silat as a vibrant cultural tradition. He emphasized the importance of planning each program to have a real impact on the community's cultural literacy.

He said that collaboration between the regional administration and cultural communities must be based on clear, mutually reinforcing objectives. In this manner, pencak silat can develop as part of the cultural ecosystem of the Yogyakarta Special Region, integrated with the education and tourism sectors.

Furthermore, His Majesty encouraged developing innovative, creative, and adaptive pencak silat programs without relying solely on large budgets. A well-thought-out activity proposal is key to facilitating synergy with various stakeholders, including the education and tourism sectors.

Regeneration is a key focus. He expressed belief that pencak silat should be introduced at an early age to build character, instill values, and strengthen the identity of the younger generation. This will ensure pencak silat remains relevant and sought after across generations.

On that occasion, Paseduluran Angkringan Silat reported on the 8th Pencak Malioboro Festival (PMF), which took place from September 12–14, 2025. The festival reportedly received a positive feedback from the community and served as a meeting place for pencak silat practitioners, tourists, and the general public.

Suryadi, the Coordinator of Paseduluran Angkringan Silat, thanked the Yogyakarta Regional Administration for supporting pencak silat activities. He emphasized his community's commitment to raising public awareness of pencak silat as a cultural heritage rooted in togetherness and respect.

Suryadi's organization engages the younger generation in festivals, training, and cultural activities to ensure pencak silat remains relevant. The goal is to instill the values of pencak silat in the next generation.

Sugiarto, Deputy Coordinator of Paseduluran Angkringan Silat, said introducing pencak silat at a young age is an important step in fostering a love for local culture. He expressed hope that it becomes part of a cultural experience that benefits the community. ***
