RRI.CO.ID, Lebak – The Kasepuhan Citorek community in the Cibeber Subdistrict, Lebak Regency, Banten Province, continues to demonstrate its ability to maintain traditions amidst modernization. This customary area is a tangible example of traditional institutional systems that remain alive and functioning today.
Citorek Village is known as one of the centers of Kasepuhan that upholds ancestral customs. Traditional values are preserved not only as cultural symbols, but also implemented in the daily lives of its residents.
The Kasepuhan Citorek customary institutional system is a central pillar in regulating social, economic, and spiritual order. Every aspect of community life is governed by customary rules passed down through generations.
Citorek's customary leadership is headed by a Kokolot Karang, the highest customary authority. The Kokolot Karang carries out his duties with the assistance of various customary officials who have different functions and responsibilities.
Traditional officials who play important roles include the Wakil Kokolot and the Pangiwa. They are responsible for maintaining village order.
Additionally, the Ronda Kokolot guards the Imah Gede, the center of traditional activities. Regarding religious affairs and life cycle events, the Amil handles Islamic affairs, the Bengkong performs circumcision rituals, the Paraji assists with births, and the Palawari plays a role in social activities and community celebrations.
Decisions in Kasepuhan Citorek are never made by one person alone. Joint deliberation with the Baris Kolot is the primary decision-making mechanism, ensuring balance and harmony among residents.
Traditional institutions also play a strategic role in natural resource management. Spatial planning within the traditional territory encompasses residential areas, agricultural land, and the strictly protected forest.
Kolot Icong, the Kokolot of Karang Kasepuhan Citorek, emphasized that tradition is the primary guideline for maintaining balance in community life. "Tradition is not meant to hinder progress, but to remind humans not to damage nature and forget their origins," he said on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.
The Citorek community's spiritual dimension demonstrates a harmonious blend of ancestral beliefs and Islamic teachings. These values are reflected in various traditional rituals, one of which is Seren Taun, an expression of gratitude for the harvest.
Yosep Muhamad Holis, Head of the Lebak Regency Culture and Tourism Agency, praised the continued existence of the Kasepuhan Citorek customary system, which he considers strong and relevant.
"Kasepuhan Citorek is an extraordinary cultural asset. Their local wisdom has proven effective in preserving nature and strengthening social cohesion," said Yosep.
The Lebak community also praised Kasepuhan Citorek. Siti Aminah, a Rangkasbitung resident, called Kasepuhan Citorek a symbol of cultural resilience in the face of changing times. "Citorek is the pride of Lebak. They prove that modernization does not have to erase tradition and identity," she said.
The Citorek traditional Institution is working with the village administration and other stakeholders on local wisdom-based development that strengthens the community's economy without neglecting traditional values.
The Kasepuhan Citorek is a good example of how tradition isn't a relic of the past, but rather a living system that's relevant today. They steadfastly uphold tradition, but they're also open to change. (Misni Parjiati/Bambang MBKA)
