RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, has highlighted the enduring legacy of renowned Muslim scholar and national figure Ahmad Syafii Maarif, describing his ideas on humanity, culture, and nationhood as a continuing source of inspiration for future generations.

Speaking at the cultural event “Keeping the Torch Alive, Nurturing the Nation’s Conscience” at the National Museum of Indonesia in Jakarta, Thursday, June 18, 2026, Fadli said Syafii Maarif’s values remain highly relevant in addressing contemporary social and cultural challenges. The event was part of the 2026 Ahmad Syafii Maarif Month, an annual program organized by the MAARIF Institute.

The program seeks to preserve and promote the intellectual legacy of Syafii Maarif, widely regarded as one of Indonesia’s most respected public thinkers and moral leaders. Through a series of activities held throughout May and June, the initiative encourages public reflection on the relationship between religiosity, nationalism, and humanity.

Fadli praised the MAARIF Institute for its commitment to keeping Syafii Maarif’s ideas alive and accessible to wider audiences. He said the event’s theme reflects the values championed by the late scholar, who consistently placed culture, morality, and human dignity at the center of national development.

“Ahmad Syafii Maarif was a humble figure whose integrity was reflected in both his words and actions. His intellectual honesty and commitment to humanity remain an example for all of us,” the Minister said.

He also recalled his personal interactions with Syafii Maarif during the latter’s leadership role in Indonesia’s Muhammadiyah organization. According to Fadli, the late scholar had a deep appreciation for history and cultural heritage, viewing them as essential foundations for building a strong and inclusive nation.

“I believe Buya Syafii’s love for history, culture, and human values offers an important example for all of us in safeguarding and preserving our national heritage,” he said. Fadli expressed hope that Syafii Maarif’s contributions would continue to inspire younger generations.

The event also featured the launch of a new book titled Buya Syafii in the Eyes of Ordinary People, which presents stories, reflections, and personal experiences from individuals who were inspired by the late scholar’s life and teachings. The book was officially introduced by representatives of the Ahmad Syafii Maarif Foundation together with the Minister of Culture and other government officials.

Concluding his remarks, Fadli emphasized the importance of strengthening community-based cultural development and expanding Indonesia’s cultural economy and creative industries. He said these efforts are part of a broader strategy to enhance Indonesia’s cultural influence and soft power on the global stage while preserving the values championed by Ahmad Syafii Maarif.
