KBRN, Magetan: The Magetan Regency Administration has revived the unique cultural atmosphere of East Java through the Labuhan Sarangan 2026 tradition at Sarangan Lake, Plaosan Subdistrict, on the slopes of Mount Lawu.

The annual ritual not only symbolizes the richness of local heritage but has also become a major attraction for visitors from across Indonesia and abroad.

Magetan Regent Nanik Endang explained that Labuhan Sarangan, also known as Larung Sesaji, is a tradition of the Sarangan Village community held every year during the Javanese month of Ruwah, which coincides with Sha’ban in the Islamic calendar, ahead of Ramadan.

The ritual is performed as an expression of gratitude for livelihood, safety, and blessings. “Labuhan or Larung Sesaji is a way of giving thanks to nature for sustaining life, while also preserving the culture of our ancestors,” Nanik said during the ceremony at Lake Sarangan on Friday, January 16, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

She noted that the tradition, once known simply as a village cleansing ritual, has evolved into a cultural tourism event that draws both domestic and international tourists.

Beyond safeguarding heritage, the event also stimulates economic growth in the surrounding community. This year, Nanik announced that Labuhan Sarangan has been officially recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage (WBTb) by the Ministry of Culture. “We hope this tradition will continue to be a source of pride for the people of Magetan and strengthen the region’s cultural identity,” she said.

The ritual follows a series of customary events, beginning with a pilgrimage to ancestral graves, prayers, and offerings. Central to the ceremony is the procession of a tumpeng, a cone-shaped rice cake, accompanied by agricultural produce, carried from Sarangan Village to the lakeside stage.

After prayers are recited, the tumpeng is placed on a motorboat and solemnly cast into the middle of Lake Sarangan, symbolizing gratitude and harmony with nature. Regent Nanik herself led the ritual this year.

Magetan’s Head of Tourism and Culture Agency, Joko Trihono, emphasized that Labuhan Sarangan has become a permanent fixture in the regency’s 2026 Calendar of Events. “We hope this event will attract more tourists to Lake Sarangan,” he said.

Official data show that the lake welcomed more than 1.09 million visitors in 2025, generating regional income of IDR 20.2 billion (USD 1.19 million), up from 1.08 million the previous year.

The Magetan Regency Administration reaffirmed its commitment to developing Lake Sarangan as a sustainable natural and cultural tourism icon.

By combining community participation with government support, the regency aims to preserve its ancestral traditions while positioning Sarangan as a leading destination that embodies both cultural depth and environmental sustainability. ***
