Smoke Conditions Force Cancellations at Supadio Airport Pontianak

RRI.CO.ID, Pontianak - Smoke from forest and land fires has reduced visibility at Supadio International Airport in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, to 300–500 meters, prompting the cancellation of 30 flights to ensure operational safety.

Supadio Airport General Manager Maya Damayanti said visibility remained below the minimum safety threshold from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. local time. “Flight safety and security are the top priorities in every decision regarding flight operations,” Maya said in Sungai Raya on Saturday, September 12, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Following coordination with all airlines, 30 flights--15 departures and 15 arrivals--were canceled. Poor visibility prevented aircraft from taking off or landing, causing significant delays before airlines ultimately canceled affected flights.

Supadio Airport management continues to coordinate with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), AirNav Indonesia, and all airlines to monitor changes in visibility and weather conditions.

“We understand the inconvenience passengers are experiencing due to these uncontrollable weather conditions. We are maintaining intensive coordination to ensure that passenger handling and services proceed smoothly,” Maya said.

To support affected passengers, airport management has added seating in waiting areas and increased operational staff. Relief items, including face masks, bottled water, and snacks, are being distributed to passengers affected by cancellations or delays.

Ticket refunds and flight rescheduling are being handled through airline check‑in counters and customer service desks. Maya also urged airlines to promptly provide prospective passengers with updated flight status information.
