Bandung Proposes Excavators to Speed Up Citarum Sediment Removal

RRI.CO.ID, Bandung - Moving beyond emergency response, Bandung Regency is prioritizing preventive river maintenance by proposing the purchase of three excavators to accelerate sediment removal across the Citarum watershed. Officials announced on Wednesday, June 11, 2026, that the machinery will also be used for routine upkeep.
Regent Dadang Supriatna said the procurement will be submitted as part of a budget revision and that the machines will be operated jointly with the Citarum River Task Force to support work across sectors.
“We plan to buy three excavators that will be proposed in the budget revision. Those machines can be used together by the Citarum River Task Force to help resolve problems in every sector,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
Dadang explained that the urgency stems from the regency’s Citarum management area being divided into three sectors, each covering 23 subdistricts, thereby increasing the need for on‑site heavy equipment. He stressed the excavators are intended not only for river normalization and dredging but also for continued maintenance after construction is completed.
The move comes amid efforts to reduce flood impacts in South Bandung, where the regional disaster agency recorded more than 34,497 people affected by Citarum overflows in December 2025. In coordination with local plans, the Citarum River Basin Authority (BBWS Citarum) is targeting completion of normalization works, particularly at the estuary, by the end of June 2026.
“After dredging and normalization are completed, the government must also prepare equipment for sustainable maintenance. That way, river conditions can be kept stable, and flood potential continually minimized,” Dadang added.
He called for coordinated action among the regency administration, BBWS Citarum, the Citarum River Task Force, and pentahelix stakeholders to ensure interventions are targeted and sustainable. ***
