RRI.CO.ID, Pontianak - The Regional National Handicrafts Council of West Kalimantan (Dekranasda Kalbar) is actively promoting the daily use of traditional handwoven textiles (wastra) to integrate them into the community's modern lifestyle. This initiative aims to strengthen cultural preservation while ensuring that regional heritage fabrics remain adaptive and highly relevant to contemporary fashion trends.

Every regency and city across West Kalimantan possesses unique garment innovations rooted in traditional fabrics. These textiles do not only hold profound cultural and artistic values but are also highly capable of being styled into modern, elegant, and commercially competitive apparel.

"All regencies/cities in West Kalimantan have innovative traditional fabric-based fashions that not only possess high cultural value but also present a modern, elegant, and competitive appearance. This is certainly a regional potential that we should cultivate," said Head of the West Kalimantan Regional Handicrafts Council (Dekranasda Kalbar), Erlina Ria Norsan, in Pontianak on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Beyond preserving artistic identity and local philosophies, reinforcing the regional textile ecosystem yields a substantial economic impact. It serves as a financial catalyst, particularly for grassroots weavers and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) throughout West Kalimantan.

A rising public interest in wastra-based fashion opens wider market channels for authentic regional commodities, such as traditional handwoven fabrics (tenun), batik, and signature regional songket.

"The growing public interest in using wastra-based clothing will open up greater opportunities for local artisans. This is a momentum to strengthen production, quality, and marketing," Erlina explained, highlighting that increased demand serves as a vital momentum to scale up production quality and marketing reach.

Erlina also emphasized that high-profile achievements and fashion showcases must serve as a foundational motivation for local designers to keep innovating. The ultimate goal is to continuously broaden the recognition of West Kalimantan's textiles across diverse social demographics.

"This achievement is just the beginning. The next challenge is how to ensure that regional textiles not only grace the runway but also become part of people's daily lifestyles," Erlina asserted, challenging stakeholders to push these cultural fabrics past formal runways and into daily closets.

Through this sustained spirit of cultural preservation and creative innovation, Dekranasda Kalbar hopes that West Kalimantan's cultural products will gain wider renown. By successfully bridging tradition and modern wearability, regional textiles are expected to compete strongly on both national and international stages. ***
