RRI.CO.ID, Kulon Progo - The Class II Immigration Office TPI Kulon Progo, in coordination with the Yogyakarta Regional Office of the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, apprehended a 56-year-old Chinese national, identified as KW, following an alleged credit card theft aboard an aircraft at Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA).
The incident occurred inside the cabin of Citilink flight QG 773 bound for Jakarta on Monday, August 24, 2026, prior to takeoff. A fellow passenger witnessed KW removing an item from another passenger's overhead cabin luggage and concealing it in his jacket pocket, prompting an immediate report to the flight crew and Aviation Security (AVSEC).
Security officers searched KW, who had entered the country on a Visa on Arrival (VoA), and discovered a credit card belonging to a Japanese passenger, HN; KW confessed to the theft on site. Because the victim opted not to file formal criminal charges with local police, airport authorities removed KW from the flight to prevent departures delays and transferred him to Kulon Progo Immigration for administrative detention and deportation proceedings.
Head of the DIY Regional Office of the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections Yuni Santi Nurani emphasized Indonesia's firm stance on law enforcement for foreign nationals.
"This enforcement action serves as a concrete manifestation of our selective policy, as Indonesia only welcomes foreign nationals who contribute positively and comply with the law, foreign nationals who engage in criminal acts will not be tolerated under any circumstances," Yuni said in Kulon Progo on Thursday, August 27, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Head of the Class II Immigration Office TPI Kulon Progo Mohamad Wahyudiyantoro commended the rapid inter-agency response that led to the suspect's detention.
"This marks the first immigration law enforcement case handled at YIA since the Kulon Progo Immigration Office was officially established earlier this year, the swift resolution was made possible through active coordination within the Foreigner Supervision Team (TIMPORA). For violating Article 75 of Law No. 6/2011 on Immigration, the subject is subject to Administrative Immigration Measures (TAK) and currently remains in detention pending further investigation," Mohamad Wahyudiyantoro added. ***
