RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Tanjung Lesung Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Pandeglang Regency, Banten, is positioning the 2026 Tuna Game Fishing Competition in the Sunda Strait as more than a recreational event, using it as a platform to promote marine conservation.
Combining competitive sport fishing with sustainable marine tourism, the event aims to preserve coastal ecosystems while maintaining fish populations in Banten’s waters. Held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, the competition drew 299 anglers from 74 teams representing various regions across Indonesia.
Head of the Pandeglang Tourism and Culture Agency, Budi Suhardiman Januardi, said the regency’s marine tourism potential must be maximized through activities capable of driving the tourism sector.

“Pandeglang Regency has a coastline stretching 307 kilometers, one of the longest in Banten Province. This potential must be utilized optimally through various activities that can stimulate the tourism sector,” Budi said in a statement cited in Jakarta on Monday, August 10, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
He said the development of sport fishing can be strengthened by regularly organizing fishing competitions, which also serve as a platform for connecting fishing communities from different regions with Tanjung Lesung’s coastal tourism potential.
The 2026 Tuna Game Fishing Competition was held in the waters of the Sunda Strait and involved 299 anglers grouped into 74 teams from across Indonesia.
The event formed part of the sport‑tourism agenda, combining a fishing competition, marine tourism promotion, and concern for the conservation of marine resources.
Budi expressed hope that more events would be held in Tanjung Lesung to strengthen the area’s appeal, especially as access to the destination improves.
“We hope that more events will be held in Tanjung Lesung in the future. The imminent operation of the toll road will make access easier, and we hope this will attract more domestic and international tourists,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
Tanjung Lesung Chief Operating Officer Ivonne Anggraini said the 2026 Tuna Game Fishing Competition was the second edition, following the inaugural event in 2023. She expressed hope that future competitions could be held on a larger scale.
“Hopefully, this event can be held again on a larger scale. Of course, feedback from this year’s event will serve as a lesson so that the jackpot at the next event can be even bigger,” Ivonne said.
Tanjung Lesung Director and Chairperson of the organizing committee, Kunto Wijoyo, said the competition was designed to introduce the area’s tourism potential. Through the event, Tanjung Lesung is expected to become a leading destination for sport‑fishing communities in Indonesia.
“This event also aims to provide space for various fishing communities to pursue their hobby. We hope Tanjung Lesung can become a destination of choice for communities looking to fish for large species while enjoying the beauty of the marine tourism available here,” Kunto said.
A young community leader from southern Pandeglang, Ade Asnawi, said the development of sport fishing in Tanjung Lesung should go hand in hand with increasing tourist visits and fish populations. He also emphasized the importance of involving local communities to ensure sustainability.
He expressed hope that continued collaboration among stakeholders would attract more tourists to Tanjung Lesung, strengthening its appeal as a sport‑fishing and coastal tourism destination at both the national and international levels. ***
