RRI.CO.ID, Padang - The charm of Rumah Gadang architecture and the richness of Minangkabau textiles are being used as core assets in Padang’s transformation into a fashion hub rooted in local wisdom. Partnering with the Indonesia Fashion Chamber (IFC), the Padang City Administration in South Sumatra is committed to turning these traditional values into contemporary garments ready to compete in global markets.
Padang Mayor, Fadly Amran said this during a Gala Dinner and reception with IFC officials and members from across Indonesia at Rumah Gadang Baiturrahmah, Padang on Monday evening, 20 July 2026. He also expressed appreciation for IFC’s decision to select Padang as host of the National Board Meeting and the IFC New Member Inauguration Show held on 19–21 July 2026.
He said the presence of fashion industry players from across the country is a strategic moment to expand networks and reinforce Padang’s position as a creative city that draws on local cultural wealth.
“Thank you to the entire Indonesia Fashion Chamber family for coming to Padang. We hope this series of events not only succeeds but also opens wider opportunities for collaboration to advance the creative economy,” he said, as quoted on infopublik.id.
Mayor Fadly explained that Padang’s target to become a Creative City of Gastronomy under the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) does not rely solely on Minangkabau culinary excellence. Achieving that recognition also requires support from integrated creative-economy subsectors.
“We aim for Padang to become a World City of Gastronomy. To achieve that, all potentials must move together. Not only the culinary sector, but also fashion, crafts, and other creative subsectors must be developed sustainably,” he emphasized.
As a sign of seriousness, the Padang City Administration is preparing several national and international agendas. One is the Padang International Fashion Summit, designed as a collaborative platform for designers, fashion industry players, and creative-economy actors from various countries.
“We welcome support, input, and collaboration from the IFC so the Padang International Fashion Summit can become a reality. We want Padang to grow into a fashion industry center of note in Indonesia,” he added.
Meanwhile, IFC Chairperson, Lenny Agustin Ernawati, said Padang possesses a strong cultural capital to develop as a fashion center based on local wisdom. This potential, she said, also supports the strengthening of the national creative industry.
She noted that Minangkabau cultural wealth, from architecture and textiles to traditions, contains values that can be translated into fashion works capable of competing in domestic and international markets.
“We hope collaboration with the Padang City Administration will be further strengthened to advance culture-based fashion industries. Architectural heritage and cultural values like those embodied by Rumah Gadang Baiturrahmah are invaluable assets to inspire modern fashion creations,” said Lenny.
The collaboration between the Padang City Administration and the Indonesia Fashion Chamber is expected to accelerate creative-economy growth and open new business opportunities for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and local fashion industries. The effort will also strengthen Padang’s position as a competitive cultural, culinary, and fashion tourism destination at national and global levels. ***
