RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - As Jakarta approaches its 500th anniversary, the city is preparing to transform into an internationally recognized cinema city through an important partnership between the Indonesian Film Agency (BPI) and the Jakarta Provincial Administration to strengthen Jakarta’s identity as a global city anchored in modern cultural industries.
“We have also asked the Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD) to help facilitate the cooperation between the provincial administration and the Indonesian Film Agency,” said BPI Chairperson, Fauzan Zidni, in a statement in Jakarta on Sunday, 19 July 2026.
He said the launch of the Jakarta Film Commission is a critical move to bolster the capital’s film industry. The commission will introduce programs to stimulate film-sector growth, including a 50 percent refund on viewer taxes, discounted fees for shooting at provincial administration-owned locations, and other support measures.
Jakarta DPRD Speaker, Suhud Alynudin, expressed support for several cooperation opportunities between the provincial administration and BPI. “We from the Jakarta DPRD support this, because it is part of the effort to make Jakarta a global city,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
Suhud noted that film industry development aligns with plans to establish Jakarta as a cinema city. Citing BPI data, he said Jakarta has the largest Indonesian film audience, making ecosystem strengthening essential for the industry’s optimal growth.
Beyond boosting the creative economy, the film industry plays a role in reinforcing modern culture, especially ahead of Jakarta’s 500th anniversary. “Film explains social life and serves as an example for society,” said Suhud.
He added that developing the film industry will open spaces for expression and create employment opportunities for people interested or involved in filmmaking. ***
