RRI.CO.ID, Kebumen - The Kebumen Area-Based Shrimp Farming (BUBK) project in Central Java has successfully supported food self-sufficiency while delivering economic benefits to surrounding communities.

Lawmaker of the Indonesia House of Representatives' Commission IV, Darori Wonodipuro made the remarks while attending a harvest event at BUBK Kebumen on Saturday, 11 July 2026. He noted the farm has demonstrated high productivity and is capable of reaching export markets.

Produce from BUBK Kebumen not only meets domestic demand but is also exported to the United States. The facility has furthermore created jobs for residents of nearby villages.

“This is an outstanding production initiative that supports food self-sufficiency, and its benefits can be enjoyed by the local community. What’s particularly noteworthy is that the workforce here comes from the surrounding villages,” said Darori.

He added that the BUBK Kebumen development received support from Commission IV from the outset. The project initially faced doubts until Commission IV conducted an on-site inspection.

Following that review, the site was deemed fit to proceed and construction continued. The current success of BUBK Kebumen is now seen as evidence of the potential to develop modern, area-based shrimp farming.

According to Darori, area-based shrimp cultivation can raise production while stimulating the local economy. He urged that BUBK Kebumen be maintained and further developed as a strategic asset for the national fisheries sector.

“If there are shortcomings, we should communicate and discuss them with the local administration, provincial authorities, and central government. This is a central asset that needs protection,” he said.

Darori expressed hope that continued development of area-based shrimp farming will boost national fishery output, strengthen food self-sufficiency, and expand employment opportunities for communities. (Annaila Azzahra-EN)
