RRI.CO.ID, Semarang - The Central Java Provincial Administration has revealed that Rawa Pening Lake in Semarang Regency is attracting significant interest from domestic developers, paving the way for the historic body of water to be transformed into a flagship aquatic tourism destination.

The provincial administration plans to integrate the development into a broader regional travel corridor, linking the lake with existing major tourism hubs to boost regional connectivity and visitor numbers. Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi said on Thursday, June 25, 2026, that he strongly backs the development of water-based tourism around the lake in Semarang regency, viewing it as a critical anchor for a larger regional economic network.

"Borobudur, Kopeng, and Rawapening will become one agglomeration that we will develop. However, coordination with various parties is essential, as Rawapening is also a conservation area," Ahmad said during a coordination meeting in Semarang, as quoted by Antara.

The meeting was attended by the Semarang Regent, the Salatiga City Legislative Council (DPRD) Speaker, and representatives from PT Pandawa Sapto Dewi Pesisir, a Cilacap-based developer currently bidding to manage and expand the tourism facilities around the legend-steeped Ambarawa area.

While welcoming the capital injection, Luthfi stressed that any commercial blueprints must strictly balance business ambitions with environmental preservation and cross-sectoral regulatory compliance.

Semarang Regent Ngesti Nugraha detailed that the prospective investor's vision for the lakeside zone includes floating restaurants, luxury villas, sustainable aquaculture pens, and specialized water sports facilities.

"We hope that Rawa Pening will become one of the leading destinations in Central Java," Ngesti remarked, noting the high expectations pinned on the revitalization project.

Echoing this optimism, PT Pandawa Sapto Dewi Pesisir Director Miskun shared that his firm views Rawa Pening's vast water surface as an untapped goldmine for premium eco-tourism. He noted that the governor urged the company to expedite the regulatory and planning phases.

"He said earlier that it should be hastened as quickly as possible, not too long," Miskun said, referring to the executive order to fast-track the project.

However, state officials remain cautious regarding the delicate ecology of the site. Head of Central Java Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy Agency Hanung Triyono emphasized that infrastructure expansion must tread lightly due to the lake's vital role as a water catchment area.

Hanung said that his agency will coordinate closely with the Pemali Juana River Basin Territory official Agency (BBWS) and the Public Works Ministry to draw up strict zoning laws, clearly delineating commercial tourist areas from protected conservation zones.

Adding to the complexity of the project, Rawa Pening is also slated to receive a separate international technological investment from Shiga, Japan, focusing on an advanced water management system, which officials hope will run in tandem with the tourism push.

"Hopefully, we can see the site plan this year. Because Rawa Pening falls under the Ministry of Public Works' jurisdiction, we can still participate," Hanung concluded. ***
