RRI.CO.ID, North Nias - The government is providing basic infrastructure, electricity and Starlink-based internet connectivity, to education units in North Nias Regency, North Sumatra.
Elementary and Secondary Education Minister, Abdul Mu'ti, said the provision is part of efforts to equalize education access in the country’s underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost regions (3T).
“For schools without internet, I said we will connect them to the internet. For those without electricity, we will connect them to the grid,” said the minister at Siofabanua 077279 State Elementary School, North Nias Regency, North Sumatra, on Friday, 19 June 2026.
The ministry’s field teams had already implemented the support prior to his working visit. “Thank God, everything has been completed by the ministry teams. They were here before I arrived in North Nias Regency,” he said.
The infrastructure rollout was carried out through several assistance schemes. For internet access, the Ministry provided Starlink equipment to four elementary schools and seven junior high schools in North Nias that previously lacked internet connectivity.
As part of efforts to improve education quality, the ministry also granted IDR 25 million (USD 1,402) each for installation of electricity and internet, allocated to six elementary schools and one junior high school.
North Nias Regent, Amizaro Waruwu, welcomed the minister’s visit, saying it had produced immediate improvements in local education access.
“The minister’s arrival brought many provisions for us, such as Starlink units for elementary and junior high schools that have lacked internet until now, so they will certainly get connectivity,” said the regent.
He added that several schools in the region have already received internet access and electricity support that were previously unavailable.
“Likewise, some schools that had no electricity have now had their lighting upgraded to LED and similar fixtures during the minister’s visit,” concluded the regent. (Annaila Azzahra-EN)
