- A total of 4,922 schools affected by the disaster in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra have resumed teaching and learning activities.
- Teaching and learning processes are now fully operational in the three affected provinces.
- Some schools are still using emergency rooms, tents, or borrowing from other schools due to the extensive damage to their buildings.
RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian Home Affairs Minister, Tito Karnavian, said 4,922 schools affected by recent disasters in Sumatra have resumed teaching activities. He added that classroom learning in the three affected provinces is now operating at full capacity.
Minister Tito said progress in restoring the education sector reflects positive developments in post‑disaster recovery in Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra. The government, together with relevant ministries, is accelerating repairs to damaged educational facilities.
“In terms of learning, we are at 100 percent. There are 4,922 affected schools, and repairs have been carried out,” said Minister Tito, who also chairs the Task Force for Accelerated Post‑Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (PRR) for Sumatra, during a ministerial‑level briefing of the Task Force at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture office in Central Jakarta on Thursday, 18 June 2026.
He explained that most affected schools have been returned to regular use. Repairs continue through partnerships with contractors led by the Elementary and Secondary Education Ministry.
However, Minister Tito acknowledged that a number of schools are still holding classes at temporary locations because their buildings suffered severe damage. Some schools continue to use emergency shelters and tents to support learning, and a few are temporarily sharing facilities with other educational institutions.
“Some schools were completely destroyed, carried away by landslides or flood currents. Rebuilding on those sites would pose problems, so relocation is necessary,” he said.
The task force head added that the government will continue rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts for affected educational facilities to ensure all students can learn in safe, adequate environments over the long term. (Annaila Azzahra-EN)
