RRI.CO.ID, Sorong - The newly established province of Southwest Papua is turning to international collaboration to fortify its foundational public services. In doing so, the administration has secured a strategic partnership with the Australian government to transform local healthcare and human resources.
Under the newly introduced Kita Sehat (We are Healthy) Program, the initiative aims to build a resilient regional healthcare network from the ground up. This framework positions comprehensive healthcare access as the primary catalyst for long-term human resource development in the region.
Speaking in Sorong, Southwest Papua Deputy Governor, Ahmad Nausrau, emphasized that human development remains a top priority for the local administration. He also noted that the caliber of local human resources is deeply intertwined with adequate healthcare access.
He highlighted that the program represents a mutual commitment between the Indonesian and Australian governments to drive sustainable transformation across priority development zones.
"Health and education are two main foundations of human development. When people are healthy and have access to good healthcare, they will be able to learn, work, and contribute optimally to regional development," said Ahmad, as quoted by Antara.
As a newly formed autonomous region, Southeast Papua faces distinct hurdles in establishing stable public services, making the selection of the province for this international rollout particularly significant.
Ahmad expressed that the local administration feels deeply honored by the trust placed in them to implement the initiative, which is anticipated to accelerate structural improvements across both health and education sectors.
"As a new province, Southwest Papua still faces many challenges in providing basic development services. Therefore, the Kita Sehat Program presents a valuable opportunity to accelerate the strengthening of the health system and improve the quality of life for the community," he explained.
The blueprint of the Kita Sehat Program targets four core areas, leading with the reinforcement and quality enhancement of primary healthcare services. The framework also encompasses broad human resource development, integrated human and animal healthcare, and the overall strengthening of health security systems. Moving away from a purely curative medical model, the strategy aligns closely with the province's urgent needs by incorporating preventative care, medical staff capacity building, and systemic resilience.
A pivotal aspect of the initiative is the implementation of the One Health approach, which links human, animal, and environmental health together to tackle modern medical crises cohesively. Ahmad noted that public health threats can no longer be treated in isolation, as diseases crossing between species and ecosystems require a unified front.
"Today's health threats no longer exist in isolation. Diseases affecting humans, animals, and the environment are interconnected. Therefore, collaborative approaches like One Health are crucial for building resilient health systems," he added.
Looking forward, the provincial administration aims to ensure equity in the program’s execution. Ahmad expressed his hope that the tangible benefits of the Kita Sehat initiative will successfully bridge the urban-rural divide, moving beyond major town centers to reach remote villages and districts that remain in critical need of quality medical attention. ***
