  • The West Java Provincial Administration has rejected the Bandung Municipal Administration's request to declare a waste emergency, forcing the city to pivot to alternative strategies.
  • Bandung is currently the only city in West Java that lacks its own independent landfill, creating a total reliance on the province-managed Sarimukti landfill.

RRI.CO.ID, Bandung - The refusal of the West Java Provincial Administration to declare a waste emergency in Bandung City has forced municipal authorities to pivot to alternative waste management strategies. Despite the setback, Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan emphasized that tackling the city's mounting waste crisis remains a top priority that cannot be sidelined by administrative technicalities.

“When the application is not approved, we will find another way. This waste problem must be resolved, it cannot be delayed,” said Farhan in an official communication received in Bandung on Thursday, June 4, 2026.

The rejection highlights a deep-seated structural challenge for Bandung, which is currently the only city in West Java that does not own and operate its own landfill. This lack of independent infrastructure forces the local administration to rely entirely on the Sarimukti landfill, a facility managed directly by the West Java Provincial Administration.

Mayor Farhan pointed out that this dependency significantly limits the Bandung municipal administration’s authority regarding waste management and transportation, particularly concerning disposal quotas and residual waste permits.

To address the immediate bottleneck, the Bandung Municipal Administration is embracing an initiative backed by the West Java Provincial Administration to deploy localized waste processing machines across every subdistrict. Municipal authorities view this decentralized approach as a viable short-term remedy to reduce the volume of waste requiring transport.

“We welcome the assistance from the provincial administration. The plan is to have a processing machine in every subdistrict. Whatever form it takes, we are ready to accept and optimize it,” noted Farhan, as quoted by Antara.

Looking toward sustainable urban planning, the city administration is also exploring long-term avenues to establish either a large-scale integrated waste processing facility or an independent municipal landfill.

Mayor Farhan reiterated that an independent, integrated disposal site remains an urgent requirement for the city, given that even advanced processing methods inevitably yield residual waste that demands adequate final disposal. He concluded by calling for a united front, stating that maximizing these efforts requires extensive collaboration among all stakeholders involved. ***
