RRI.CO.ID, Palembang - Authorities in South Sumatra have detected a surge of fire-related heat signatures across the province. Consequently, emergency officials are urging residents to avoid any open burning as much of the region remains highly flammable.

The South Sumatra Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) recorded 34 hotspots across the province as of 5:30 a.m. Jakarta time on Tuesday, June 2, 2026. Head of the BPBD’s Emergency Response Division, Sudirman, said Muara Enim Regency accounted for the largest share with 14 hotspots.

"Muara Enim is the area with the highest number of hotspots today," he said, as quoted by Antara.

Other hotspot counts included seven in Ogan Komering Ulu Selatan and four in Musi Rawas Utara. Musi Banyuasin registered three hotspots. Ogan Ilir, Ogan Komering Ilir, Ogan Komering Ulu, Empat Lawang, and Musi Rawas each recorded two hotspots. Banyuasin, Lahat, Ogan Komering Ulu Timur, and the city of Prabumulih each had one hotspot.

Meteorological forecasts from the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) showed generally clear to partly cloudy skies in South Sumatra during the morning, with a chance of light rain in some areas during the afternoon and evening.

Areas with potential afternoon showers include Ogan Komering Ilir, Musi Rawas Utara, Musi Rawas, Lubuklinggau city, Empat Lawang, Pagar Alam city, Lahat, Muara Enim, and Ogan Komering Ulu Selatan.

The BPBD warned that much of the province is currently classed as very susceptible to fire, and urged residents to refrain from land-clearing or other open burning to prevent forest and land fires. ***
