RRI.CO.ID, Lebak – The palm sugar industry in Lebak Regency, Banten, has evolved into a primary economic pillar for the region, fueled by a steady surge in market demand both domestically and abroad. Leveraging an abundant supply of raw materials and a decades-old tradition of craftsmanship, the sector is now a significant contributor to rural financial stability.
"It is estimated that dozens of tons of palm sugar are supplied to the market daily by local artisans," said Head of the Lebak Regency Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (UKM) Agency, Imam Suangsa, in a statement released on Saturday, April 18, 2026.
As reported by Antara, current data indicates that 5,815 registered artisans are active in the industry, collectively generating an annual turnover of approximately IDR 96.65 billion (5.64 million). This production is concentrated across several subdistricts, including Sobang, Muncang, Cibeber, and Leuwidamar, with products reaching markets in Banten, Jakarta, West Java, and international destinations.
Imam emphasized the government's commitment to further progress. "We are encouraging artisans to enhance quality and standards to remain competitive, ensuring this stays a source of community livelihood and a flagship regional commodity."
The industry's growth is also characterized by modern adaptation. Chairperson of the Mitra Mandala Joint Business Group (KUBE), Anwar Aan, explained that production has shifted to meet contemporary consumer preferences. The sugar is now processed into traditional molded blocks and a powdered variety popularly known as "ant sugar".
A primary competitive advantage of Lebak’s palm sugar is its organic status. Because the plantations are situated near the Mount Halimun Salak National Park (TNGHS), the trees are naturally free from chemical fertilizers. This organic quality makes the sugar a sought-after healthy alternative for beverages and culinary use, particularly favored for its flavor profile and perceived suitability for health-conscious consumers.
The domestic reach of these products continues to expand, with high demand reported from major cities including Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Jakarta. Powdered palm sugar and ginger-infused varieties are currently priced at IDR 25,000 (USD 1.46) per package, while traditional molded blocks are sold at IDR 250,000 (USD 14.59) per toros.
Beyond its financial yields, the industry serves as a crucial social safety net. "Our palm sugar production can absorb hundreds of workers, including local farmers, thereby stimulating the economy of village communities," concluded Anwar. ***
