RRI.CO.ID, Ternate - The Mount Dukono Volcano Observation Post (PGA) in North Halmahera, North Maluku, reported a significant eruption on Monday, April 6, 2026. The volcano ejected a thick column of volcanic ash reaching 1,000 meters above its peak, signaling a renewed phase of heightened activity for the 1,087-meter-high mountain.
The eruption occurred at approximately 09.26 local time, with the ash cloud observed drifting toward the west. "The eruption occurred earlier at around 09.26 local time with the ash column observed as high as 1,000 meters above the peak," PGA Dukono officer Bambang Sugiono said when contacted from Ternate on Monday, March 6, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
According to seismic records, the eruption featured a maximum amplitude of 17 mm and lasted for approximately 49.69 seconds. This latest event follows a period of dormancy;, after seven months of relative quiet, Mount Dukono began erupting again on March 30, 2026, and has remained active since.
"Since March 30, 2026, eruptions have started occurring until now," Bambang explained.
The volcano is currently maintained at Level II (Alert) status. Authorities have issued a strict warning to residents, visitors, and tourists to refrain from any activities within a 4-kilometer radius of the Malupang Warirang Crater.
Due to the periodic nature of the eruptions and the unpredictability of ash dispersal, which depends entirely on wind speed and direction, the PGA recommends that the public stay clear of the mountain. Individuals are urged to avoid the designated 4 km exclusion zone and must not attempt to climb to the peak.
Furthermore, for respiratory protection, residents in the surrounding areas are strongly encouraged to have masks ready to prevent potential health issues caused by falling volcanic ash. Emergency services continue to monitor the situation closely as the volcano shows no signs of returning to its previous dormant state. ***
