RRI.CO.ID, Bandung - The tragic death of two 2-month-old Bengal tiger cubs, Huru and Hara at Bandung Zoo, West Java, has sparked a sharp rebuke from the West Java Regional Representatives Council (DPRD), with officials calling for an immediate overhaul of the facility's management.

Deputy Speaker of the West Java DPRD, Ono Surono, emphasized on Monday, March 30, 2026, that animal welfare must be the absolute priority as the historic Bandung Zoo remains mired in a protracted administrative conflict.

The deaths of the cubs are being viewed not as an isolated incident, but as a predictable consequence of systemic neglect. "The death of these two tiger cubs is not just an ordinary incident, but the impact of a protracted management conflict at Bandung Zoo. This event was actually predicted long ago due to a lack of concern from both the central and regional administrations, " said Ono in Bandung on March 30, 2026.

As reported by Antara, he further noted that despite the central government's recent takeover, operational standards and coordination remain dangerously disorganized.

To prevent further loss of life, the DPRD had previously proposed relocating the zoo’s inhabitants to more stable environments, such as the Ragunan or Surabaya Zoos. However, Ono lamented that high-level discussions between regional leaders have yet to translate into concrete action on the ground.

While the Ministry has reportedly allocated funds for animal feed, bureaucratic delays in payment processing continue to disrupt daily operations at the site. "We must all ensure that the animals at Bandung Zoo receive proper care. If the government is not yet ready, then we are also ready to help."

The crisis extends beyond the animal enclosures to the human element of the institution. Hundreds of employees are currently working under a cloud of uncertainty regarding their legal status and consistent income.

Ono stressed that the government must step in to provide stability for the workforce to ensure the facility can function safely. "This is a matter of humanity and welfare. The government must be present so that employees can work in peace," he urged, calling for a clear and immediate roadmap for the future of the zoo. ***
