RRI.CO.ID, Meulaboh - The seasonal tradition of consuming roasted coconut has surged in popularity across West Aceh, Aceh Province, during the holy month of Ramadan 1447 Hijri year. This transforms a local health remedy into a thriving seasonal economy.

Despite a notable price increase compared to previous years, vendors in the region are reporting robust sales. Residents continue to prioritize the drink’s purported medicinal benefits for their iftar meals.

In the Peunaga Rayeuk village of Meureubo Subdistrict, local vendor Niswa confirmed on Wednesday, February 26, 2026, that demand has hit a peak of over 100 coconuts daily. "Thank God, every day we are able to sell 100 roasted coconuts or more," said Niswa, as quoted by Antara.

She noted that this seasonal trade has become a vital source of income for many families during the fasting month. While the drink was priced between IDR 7,000 (USD 0.42) and IDR 8,000 (USD 0.48) last year, the current market rate has stabilized at a flat IDR 10,000 (USD 0.60) per one roasted coconut.

The beverage remains an exclusive Ramadan staple, rarely found in West Aceh during other times of the year, which adds to its allure as a cultural specialty. Sabrina, a resident of Meulaboh, explained that the drink's reputation for restorative properties makes it a top choice for those breaking their fast.

“Roasted coconut is popular because of its unique taste. This drink is also believed to be able to increase stamina after fasting all day,” she said.

The appeal of roasted coconut is further enhanced by its versatility, as it is often infused with various natural ingredients to create complex flavor profiles. This adaptability, combined with the traditional belief in its ability to boost physical wellness, ensures that the roasted coconut remains a centerpiece of the Ramadan culinary landscape in West Aceh. ***
