RRI.CO.ID, Natuna - The high quality of livestock health in Natuna Regency in Riau Islands, has reached a significant milestone, as the region officially maintains its status as a Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) free zone through purely natural conditions. The Riau Islands Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Agency (BKHIT) confirmed that this achievement is a direct result of stringent traffic control and rigorous monitoring of live animal movements into the islands.

Iwan Setiawan, the Person in Charge of the Natuna Service Unit, confirmed the report from Natuna on Thursday, February 13, 2026. He explained that livestock in the region hold an FMD-free status naturally, achieved without the need for medical intervention or the administration of vaccines.

Under this protective policy, the entry of FMD carriers from suspected or infected areas remains strictly prohibited. This restriction specifically targets live even-toed ungulates, such as cattle and goats, to prevent any potential outbreaks.

"Based on the results of our tracing and supervision, cattle in Natuna remain declared FMD-free without the use of vaccines," remarked Iwan, as quoted by Antara.

This vaccine-free status serves as a major competitive advantage for local farmers, signaling superior livestock health and streamlining the distribution process to other regions. However, Iwan emphasized that strict administrative and health protocols remain mandatory for all shipments.

Essential requirements include a Veterinary Certificate (SV) and an accredited laboratory Test Result Certificate (SHP) declaring a negative FMD status. Additionally, a vaccine-free statement and an Animal Health Certificate (SKKH) issued by the relevant government office are required.

"With these conditions, cattle originating from Natuna can indeed be distributed to areas outside the region," he added.

To uphold these standards, the Riau Islands Quarantine Agency continues to urge the public and local business actors to remain disciplined in reporting their commodities. This cooperation ensures that all animal, fish, and plant products, along with their derivatives, remain safe, healthy, and fit for consumption.

Iwan reassured stakeholders that the process is accessible. "We ensure that quarantine services are easy and affordable. Please immediately report any detected illness in livestock to the nearest quarantine office or a government veterinarian." ***
