RRI.CO.ID, Pelalawan – A multi-agency investigation is currently underway in Pelalawan Regency, Riau, following the grim discovery of a critically endangered Sumatran elephant found dead and decapitated within a commercial forest concession. The condition of the carcass has sparked strong suspicions that the animal, scientifically known as Elephas maximus sumatranus, fell victim to illegal ivory poaching.

As reported by Antara, the investigation brought together a high-level joint team to conduct a comprehensive sweep of the crime scene (TKP) located within the PT Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper (RAPP) concession area in the Ukui Subdistrict. Experts from the Riau Regional Police’s Forensic Laboratory (Bidlabfor) and the Special Criminal Investigation Directorate (Ditkrimsus) joined forces with forest rangers, the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), and local police to gather forensic evidence.

Pelalawan Police Chief, Adj. Sr. Com John Louis Letedara, confirmed the disturbing details of the scene during an official statement on Thursday, February 6, 2026. He described the elephant as having been found in a seated position with its head completely severed.

"We are still conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause of the elephant's death, processing the crime scene, and collecting statements from witnesses," he remarked.

As part of the forensic effort, the Bidlabfor team collected soil samples from the surrounding area for laboratory analysis to detect any chemical substances or toxins. Meanwhile, the management of PT RAPP has been coordinating closely with the police to support the ongoing probe.

The initial discovery was made on the night of Monday, February 2, 2026, by a witness named Winarno, who was led to the site by a pungent odor emanating from the forest. "I didn’t know what had happened, but I immediately reported it to the security personnel," recounted Winarno.

Following the initial report, the Criminal Investigation Unit (Satreskrim) and the Ukui Sector Police arrived at the location on February 3. A larger joint task force subsequently performed a necropsy on-site to extract vital biological data. Authorities are now focused on identifying the perpetrators behind the killing, emphasizing that such acts threaten the survival of the species.

"We will continue to make every effort to protect the wildlife present in our region," affirmed Adj. Sr. Com John Louis Letedara.

In light of this tragedy, the police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or criminal acts immediately. Citizens can provide information by visiting the nearest police station or by contacting the national 110 call center. ***
