RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Criminal Investigation Unit Chief of Temanggung Police, Central Java, First Inspector I Komang Mahendra Deputra, has described the condition in which a family of four was discovered dead inside a camping tent. He conveyed that the victims were found in a state of rigor mortis when officers opened the tent.
The family had arrived at the tourist site to camp and spend the night in the camping area in Kledung, Temanggung, on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. The following morning, tourist site staff approached the family's tent to remind them of checkout time, as the camping area was due to be cleaned.
Receiving no response from inside the tent, the staff proceeded to open it, and that was when all four victims were found dead, their bodies already stiff.
"As for the confirmed cause of death, we cannot yet confirm it as the autopsy process is still ongoing. The same applies to the food sample examination at the Central Java Regional Police Forensic Laboratory," he said in an interview on Friday, May 29, 2026.
Police have found preliminary indications that the victims may have died from poisoning. Among the items being examined is a barbecue dish the family brought with them to the campsite.
To date, the Temanggung Police Criminal Investigation Unit has examined at least four witnesses to further determine the exact cause of the incident. "Once the entire autopsy and identification process has been completed, the bodies of the victims are planned to be handed over to the family for burial," he said.
One of the victims' relatives, identified as Dian, said the family had a habit of travelling, particularly during holidays coinciding with major religious observances.
"On the eve of Takbir, after breaking the fast, they went to Temanggung. They did not say exactly where they were going, only that they wanted to go for a trip," she said.
She explained that Ali's family had made it a tradition to go on trips together every year when the Eid al-Adha holiday arrived. The family's wholesale store was even temporarily closed during the holiday period to allow the family to travel together. (Annaila Azzahra/EN)
