RRI.CO.ID, Trenggalek – A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 struck the southern coastal region of Java on Friday, February 6, 2026. The earthquake was centered in the southern waters off Pacitan Regency, East Java, at 1:10 a.m. Jakarta time.

Tremors were reportedly felt across several areas in East Java, ranging from Pacitan, Trenggalek, and Tulungagung to Surabaya, Pasuruan, Jember, and Banyuwangi. The vibrations were even felt in several regions along the northern coast (Pantura).

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the earthquake at coordinates 8.89 South Latitude and 111.18 East Longitude. The epicenter was located at sea, approximately 90 kilometers southeast of Pacitan, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Triadi Atmono, Chief Executive of the Trenggalek Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), remarked that the earthquake was classified as shallow. However, he confirmed that it did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.

“Based on information received from BMKG, the earthquake occurred at sea at a shallow depth. BMKG has also confirmed there is no tsunami potential,” said Triadi in a short message sent to the BPBD Trenggalek internal group.

As of now, the BPBD has not received any reports of casualties, injuries, or structural damage resulting from the quake. Nevertheless, the tremor was strong enough to wake residents and trigger brief panic.

Several residents reportedly fled their homes in anticipation of possible aftershocks. “We are currently continuing to monitor developments on the ground, including any potential secondary impacts. We hope there will be no aftershocks,” added Triadi.

The BPBD urged the public to remain calm yet vigilant, and to follow official information from BMKG and relevant agencies regarding the evolving situation. (Annaila Azzahra/Bambang MBKA)
