RRI.CO.ID, Samarinda - PT Supra Bara Energi has implemented deep cement injections and drainage systems to shield the Kelay River from coal mining impacts in Berau Regency, East Kalimantan. These measures were verified during a field review by the East Kalimantan Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Agency.

As reported by Antara, the inspection ensured compliance with directives from the ESDM Ministry's Chief Mining Inspector to protect nearby communities and the environment.

"We have conducted a field visit to ensure that all directives from the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry' Chief Mine Inspector have been implemented by the company to guarantee the safety of residents and the surrounding environment," said East Kalimantan ESDM Agency Head, Bambang Arwanto, in Samarinda on Tuesday, January 3, 2026.

The provincial review responded to public concerns over potential ecological disasters due to the mine's proximity to the river. While licensing and oversight authority rests with Indonesia ESDM Ministry, local officials maintain a moral duty to monitor on-site implementation.

The inspected Production Operation Mining Business License (IUP) area spans Rantau Panjang and Pagar Bukur villages in Sambaliung and Teluk Bayur subdistricts.

"The technical team found that the company has implemented cement injection (grouting) as a vital technical control measure to maintain soil stability," said Bambang.

This grouting technique involves injecting cement to depths of 600 meters along the eastern side of the pit. The company also installed specialized drainholes to reduce saturation on pit walls.

Reclamation of the post-mining void is currently progressing, with elevation measurements showing a 40-meter rise from the pit bottom. This was achieved by backfilling the area with overburden material totaling approximately 2.6 million bank cubic meters (BCM).

An additional 10 million BCM of overburden is needed to meet closure targets. Current efforts focus on the first level at minus 90 meters below sea level in PIT 55.

Company management aims to complete this initial pit closure by August 2026.

"Based on the final planning submitted by management, this former mining area will eventually have a final elevation of five meters above sea level," said Bambang.

The reclaimed area will feature a 500-meter horizontal span between pit walls, serving as a natural buffer. ***
