Mataram Tightens Vigilance Against LSD Outbreak

RRI.CO.ID, Mataram – The Mataram City Administration in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) has escalated anticipatory measures against Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in cattle, despite the region currently remaining case-free. This heightened vigilance follows reports of LSD detections across several regions in Indonesia, including Bali, where the disease was identified on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.

Lalu Hapiludin, Head of the Livestock Division at the Mataram City Agriculture Agency, speaking on behalf of the Agency Head Lalu Jauhari, explained that the early warning policy aims to protect the local livestock population.

"Past experiences with animal disease outbreaks have served as a vital lesson. We must ensure the region is not too late in implementing preventative measures," he remarked on Friday, January 30, 2026.

Hapiludin noted that LSD was first detected in Riau Province before spreading through parts of Sumatra and Java. The threat has now drawn closer to West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) following cases in Bali in late December. Consequently, the NTB Provincial Administration has issued a circular urging all subdistricts to increase readiness against potential transmission.

"Clinically, the symptoms of LSD in cattle closely resemble Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), characterized by high fever, skin lumps, physical weakness, lethargy, and a loss of appetite," explained Hapiludin.

He further noted that the disease is transmitted via blood-sucking insects, such as mosquitoes, flies, and ticks, which contributes to its high potential for widespread transmission.

As a preventive strategy, the Mataram City Agriculture Agency is focusing on insect control, maintaining stable hygiene, disinfecting equipment, isolating sick livestock, administering multivitamins, and preparing for LSD vaccinations.

"Additionally, we are distributing educational materials to farmers, particularly at livestock markets, to strengthen early detection efforts," concluded Hapiludin. (Annaila Azzahra/Bambang MBKA)
