RRI.CO.ID, Tangerang - The ceiling of a classroom at Public Senior High School 5 Tangerang Regency, Banten, collapsed on Friday, January 23, 2026, injuring 12 students during an active lesson. Simultaneously, powerful winds ripped through the Adiyasa Housing Complex in Cikasungka, Solear Subdistrict, destroying the roofs of over a dozen commercial shophouses.
Nunung Syarif Hidayat, Head of the Senior High School Section at the Banten Provincial Education Agency, confirmed that the 12 victims included two male and 10 female students. While the impact was significant, all victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries and have since been discharged to their respective homes.
"On average, the victims suffered minor to moderate injuries, such as bruising and abrasions. In-person learning activities have been suspended," said Syarif Hidayat on Friday, January 23, 2026.
According to reports, the incident occurred at approximately 8.30 a.m. Jakarta time. At the time, 35 Grade X students were inside the classroom.
"To ensure the safety of both students and faculty, and following consultations with relevant stakeholders, we have decided to transition to remote online learning for the time being," he added.
Ahmad Taufik, Head of the Tangerang Regency Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), attributed the structural failure at Public Senior High School 5 to ongoing extreme weather. The region has experienced persistent high-intensity rainfall from morning until afternoon over the past several days.
Ahmad Taufik noted that the building’s roof had developed leaks, which eventually led to the ceiling's collapse. BPBD teams are currently on-site to conduct a thorough inspection and confirm the extent to which weather conditions compromised the structure.
In a separate incident, Solear Subdistrict Head, Rizkia Nurul Fajar, reported that strong winds caused severe damage to the roofs of several shophouses in the Adiyasa Housing Complex, Cikasungka.
While no injuries or fatalities were reported in Solear, several commercial facilities and vendor properties were heavily damaged.
"Field reports indicate the incident occurred during heavy rain accompanied by gale-force winds. We have coordinated with the Tangerang Regency BPBD to evacuate debris and clear the affected areas," said Fajar. (Annaila Azzahra/Bambang MBKA)
