RRI.CO.ID, Nusa Dua - In a significant move toward sustainable tourism, State-owned PT Pengembangan Pariwisata Indonesia (ITDC) is tackling water scarcity in Bali by successfully converting seawater into a vital resource for the Nusa Dua resort area.
The state-owned enterprise, a member of the InJourney holding, has produced 331,000 cubic meters of clean water through specialized desalination processes over the past three months. This initiative positions the company as a pioneer in utilizing alternative water sources to support the island’s thriving travel industry.
During a press briefing in Badung Regency on Thursday, January 22, 2026, ITDC Operations Director, Troy Warokka, highlighted the scale of the facility's potential impact.
"When operating at full capacity, the production capacity reaches up to 1.31 million cubic meters per year," said Troy Warokka, as quoted by Antara.
The facility utilizes Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) technology, a sophisticated system that employs osmotic pressure to separate salt from seawater to create potable water. This technology is recognized as a highly efficient and sustainable solution to the persistent challenges of limited freshwater supplies, particularly in rapidly developing coastal tourism hubs.
By prioritizing this method, the administration aims to drastically reduce the region's reliance on dwindling groundwater reserves. This initiative also serves to bolster environmental resilience against the ongoing threats of climate change.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the project marks a historic milestone in Indonesian corporate regulation. ITDC is the first company in the country to receive an official permit from the Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) Ministry for the processing of seawater into consumable water through its subsidiary.
This achievement ensures the long-term operational sustainability of the Nusa Dua Subdistrict. This effort aligns it with the broader vision of developing a world-class "green tourism" destination that remains functional even amidst shifting environmental conditions. ***
