RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has announced plans to implement a Work From Home (WFH) policy for civil servants in response to the extreme weather conditions affecting the capital over the past few days.
In addition to government employees, remote learning will be applied to students should heavy rainfall persist. This policy is being prepared as a preemptive measure to minimize disruptions to public activity and mobility caused by severe weather.
Governor Pramono said that the WFH mandate will be triggered if high-intensity rainfall occurs on workdays and shows potential to hinder public movement.
"If there are indications of heavy rain on a regular workday, I will decide to implement work from home, especially for our students," said the Governor at the Jakarta City Hall on Wednesday, January 21, 2026.
He cited the heavy rains on Saturday, January 17, and Sunday, January 18, 2026, as examples where the policy was not required because they coincided with a long holiday weekend.
The Governor explained that those instances did not disrupt office or school activities. However, he expressed hope that Jakarta's weather would stabilize so that WFH and remote learning mandates would not be necessary.
"If it happens again, and hopefully it won't, we are ready. Since the recent heavy rains fell on Saturday and Sunday during a long holiday, WFH was not required," he added.
Beyond the WFH option, the Governor urged the public to utilize public transportation during rainy weather. He noted that the use of private vehicles often exacerbates traffic congestion during bad weather, whereas public transit can significantly reduce the traffic burden.
"By using public transportation, congestion in Jakarta will certainly decrease significantly," he remarked. Governor Pramono assessed that Jakarta’s public transport system is currently well-integrated.
Various modes of transport, including the Light Rail Transit (LRT), Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), Transjakarta, and Mikrotrans, are now interconnected to support daily mobility. He expressed his hopes that citizens, particularly those in the productive age group, will shift away from private vehicle dependency.
"As the Governor of Jakarta, I hope that with the city's improving connectivity, be it through the LRT, MRT, Transjakarta, or Mikrotrans, especially since some are free of charge, people will be willing to switch to public transport," concluded Governor Pramono. (Annaila Azzahra/Bambang MBKA)
