RRI.CO.ID, Banjarmasin - The Batu Laki Limestone site in Padang Batung Subdistrict, Hulu Sungai Selatan Regency, South Kalimantan, a designated site within the Meratus UNESCO Global Geopark, has emerged as a key driver of the local economy through community-based sustainable tourism.
Site manager Muhammad Arsad said in Hulu Sungai Selatan on Thursday , October 1, 2026, tourism activities, particularly centered around traditional floating rafts (lanting wisata), have created direct economic benefits for surrounding residents.
"The presence of tourist rafts provides an economic impact for the surrounding community. Visitors who come to enjoy the scenery and natural environment here bring tangible benefits to local residents," Arsad said on Thursday as quoted by Antara.
The destination's appeal relies heavily on its preserved natural environment, featuring scenic riverways, lush vegetation, and distinctive karst formations.
Fellow site manager Akhmad Setia Budi emphasized that long-term economic gains are inextricably linked to environmental conservation efforts in the Meratus Geopark area.
"The environment must be maintained because it is from a well-preserved environment that the community derives income and benefits," Setia said on Thursday, October 1, 2026, adding that nature conservation and community welfare can progress hand in hand under sustainable management practices.
Aligning with UNESCO Global Geopark principles that integrate conservation, education, and local economic development, the management aims to expand eco-tourism operations at Batu Laki while keeping environmental protection as its primary foundation. ***
